Ohio State Benefits

Ohio Veterans Homes

It is our honor and privilege to provide comfort and care to Ohio’s heroes — wartime veterans from all across the state and all branches of service who raised their right hand to protect our freedoms. We oversee two state-run facilities: one in Sandusky that dates back to 1888, and one in Georgetown which opened in 2003.

Ohio War Orphan & Severely Disabled Veterans’ Scholarship

Ohio provides the Ohio War Orphan & Severely Disabled Veterans Scholarship Program (60% service connected), which provides financial grants to the eligible children of some Ohio veterans.  Although this program does not provide total cost for education, many who receive its benefits are also eligible for educational assistance from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Military Injury Relief Fund (MIRF)

The Military Injury Relief Fund (MIRF) grants a tax-exempt monetary payment to military service members injured in a combat action as a member of the Armed Forces of the United States serving after October 7, 2001, and to individuals diagnosed with post-traumatic stress related to a combat action while serving after October 7, 2001.  The payment is tax free, and varies year to year.  The program runs from July 1 through June 30 of each year. Can I apply more than once for a MIRF grant? Yes! Per a change to the parameters on the program outlined in the Ohio Administrative Code that was approved Feb. 28, 2023, eligible veterans can apply up to three times for this compensation.
